Guidelines for the Recognition, Assessment and Treatment of Pain
NSAIDs are described as the most predictable analgesic at every stage of osteoarthritis, with the strongest evidence supporting NSAIDs together with weight management, dietary optimization, and exercise. Adjuncts (tramadol, gabapentin, amantadine), disease-modifying agents such as polysulfated glycosaminoglycan, and corticosteroids (specifically for immune-mediated polyarthritis) are used case-by-case; surgery may be first-line in growing dogs to limit disease progression.
