Guidelines for the Recognition, Assessment and Treatment of Pain
A multimodal drug approach is recommended for chronic cancer pain: NSAIDs as the base, with opioids and adjuncts such as gabapentin added as needed, plus bisphosphonates, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy for cancer-specific pain (e.g. bone metastases). Non-drug therapies are recommended concurrently, mainly for quality-of-life benefit rather than proven direct analgesia.
