Guidelines for the Recognition, Assessment and Treatment of Pain
A multimodal protocol — an opioid plus sedation (acepromazine or an alpha-2 agonist), induction with propofol/ketamine/alfaxalone, a local block, and a perioperative NSAID — is recommended, with postoperative analgesia continuing up to 3 days, especially after ovariohysterectomy. Where opioids or other controlled drugs aren't available, an NSAID combined with an alpha-2 agonist is the suggested fallback.
